Most women who experience vaginal odor have no idea what causes it, much less how to get rid of it. Women use heavy perfume it away or use an endless supply of feminine hygiene products. The cause of bacterial vaginosis is not fully understood. BV is associated with an
imbalance in the bacteria that is normally found in a woman's vagina. The vagina normally
contains mostly "good" bacteria and fewer "harmful" bacteria. BV
develops when there is a change in the environment of the vagina that causes an increase
in harmful bacteria.
Adding to the mystery, not much is known about how women get BV. Women who have a new sex
partner or who have had multiple sex partners are more likely to develop BV. But women who
have never had sexual intercourse can be affected as well. It is not clear what role
sexual activity plays in the development of bacterial vaginosis and there are many
unanswered questions about the role that harmful bacteria play in causing BV. Women do not
get bacterial vaginosis from toilet seats, bedding, swimming pools or from touching
objects around them. Scientific studies suggest that BV is common in women of reproductive
age. In the United States, as many as 16% of pregnant women have BV. This varies by race
and ethnicity from 6% in Asians and 9% in whites to 16% in Hispanics and 23% in African
Americans.
